We need to understand that Chinese characters have gone through over a long time. Most scholars agree that the oracle bone inscriptions of more than 3,000 years ago constitute the earliest systematic array of Chinese characters.
The structural evolution that led from oracle bone inscriptions to the Chinese characters used today may be divided into three stages:
(1) The ancient writing stage, including oracle bone inscriptions, bronze inscriptions, and seal characters. Character structure was not yet finalized during this stage; it was not until the latter period of seal characters, small seal characters, that written forms were basically fixed.
(2) The official script stage. This was a transitional stage between ancient writing and Modern characters, and represents the finalizing of form and the establishment of the structural foundation of Modern characters.
(3) The Regular script stage. This represents the standard of modern written Chinese.
